System of a Down UK
A busy weekend for gigs started off with the re-arranged System of a Down UK gig at the Masons on Thursday. Despite the fact that the gig was hastily re-arranged after vocalist, Kris, had lost his voice last week, the venue was still full. System of a Down are a very technical band which is why System of a Down UK are one of the few tribute acts not just in the UK but worldwide. The musicians in SOADUK, however, are all top quality and play the songs near-perfectly. It is due to this and the fact that the actual SOAD have not for years that SOADUK get such a large and passionate crowd at their gigs. Although SOADUK have played quite a few final gigs, this is probably their final final gig, as drummer, Chad, is moving away and there are not many drummers about who can play SOAD.
I don’t really consider myself a SOAD fan as I don’t actually own anything by them but I found myself getting carried away in the gig as much as the hardcore fans who knew every lyric, such was the intensity of the playing. It was easy to see how Kris had lost his voice before the previous gig as he has to go through so many different styles during each song. I did worry towards the end of the gig when he asked the crowd to join in with the singing but thankfully, this was just a temporary break and he did manage to finish the gig in fine voice. I went to the gig with the bass player from my band, who is a 64 year old folk music fan but such was the technical proficiency and variety of the band, even he was impressed. Let’s hope that the boys can find another drummer as good as Chad so that this is not the end of System of a Down UK.
