Punks 4 Mental Health Acoustic Night - Kilkenny Cat 19/05/16
Last weekend, during Mental Health Awareness Week, Llanelli Rock Scene joined forces with Punks 4 Mental Health for two nights of great live music in support of Hafal Carmarthenshire.
The Mini Fest Kicked off on the Friday night at The Kilkenny Cat with an acoustic/ electronic night of quality live music.
Opening the evening was the fabulous Kayleigh Morgan ( of Grim Citizens)playing her solo set on acoustic guitar. Kayleigh opened her set with brilliant version of the Against Me song ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’ and treated the crowd to a solo version of the Grim Citizens track Patience. Further into her set (pleasing Punks 4 Mental Health Founder Julian Hunt even more) Kayleigh covered, live for the first time, an excellent version of Frank Turner’s ‘Tell Tale Signs.’ Great start to the night.
Next up was Llanelli Rock Scene’s very own Fosta ( of Fighting Fifth Husky) who played a solo set on his ukulele. Entertaining from the word go Fosta started out with a well-received medley of the Beastie Boys tune Fight For Your Right. Engaging the crowd with his comedic banter, Fosta sung his original tune about falling in love with a monkey ( Monkey Love) . Third track in fosta went on to sing his Pink Penguin tune, keeping the banter going , telling the crowd he should have learnt his lesson after the monkey. Other cover tunes included I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor ; Get Lucky by Daft Punk; Nobody does it better by Carly Simon and my favourite tune of the set a brainwashing original cover of Radiohead’s Creep.
The 3rd act of the night was the talented Chris Noir (from the bands Tusk & Zed Motel) . The singer/guitarist mixed his set with some original tracks and some covers. Highlights of the set included original track Midnight from his forthcoming EP and the song Shiver. Varying his set Chris played three cover tunes including Killer Moon , China Girl and a top version of the Smashing Pumpkins Tune ,Tonight.
Next up was singer and guitarist Nigel Blackmoore ( ex Dead Radio and Jizzwagon) who candidly announced he was going to play some heavy mental before starting his set. Jokes aside, accompanied by his acoustic guitar, Nigel played a professionally polished set of all original rock tunes starting with ‘The Devil’s Got A Hold’. The set went down very well with pub goers and one of the stand out tunes included Nigel’s mighty original track ‘Twisted Heart’.
The final act of the night was the awesome Cath Elms on Keyboard and vocals. Captivating the watching crowd with her music and vocals, Cath played some original tracks including her new tune called ‘Terrible Thought’ which she explained was about social anxiety.
Cover tunes included David Bowie’s Life On Mars and Radiohead’s No Surprises which sounded hauntingly beautiful and akin to her original tunes, Cath played all her music with passion.
What a super end to the night.
