Holoson with Screaming Patsy & the Travelling King Krows
The problem with last Friday’s gig was that it was in danger of clashing with the football. Thankfully, I managed to persuade the landlord of the Masons to delay the start of the gig and the football didn’t go into extra-time which meant that I was able to catch all of Screaming Patsy & The Travelling King Krows’ set. This was the band's first gig but I could tell that these were experienced musicians as they played a tight set. The boys started off with pub rock standards by Jimi Hendrix and Cream but they also threw in some unexpected covers such as Johnny Cash’ Folsom Prison Blues and Them’s Baby Please Don’t Go. They even carried this rockabilly theme into an interesting cover of The Cure’s Love Cats. The band had a great reception from the crowd with some fans even joining them on stage for a dance and they are sure to be successful on the cover band circuit.
The more experienced band on the night, Holoson, had only played one gig themselves before the night but again, the band was well rehearsed and if I did not know beforehand, I would have thought that they had been about for years. Saying that, the boys have been about for years albeit in different bands. I also watched Holoson at Burry Port carnival on Saturday and I lost count of the number of people who said to me that they didn’t know that lead vocalist Clint was back gigging in a new band so it shouldn’t take them long to build up a following. Even though they haven’t been about long, they already have a good set of original songs, opening track One Eye Open being a particular highlight for me. The band play a familiar rock sound with a slight grunge edge to it but I couldn’t say that they sound like any particular band, their style is definitely their own. As with Screaming Patsy, even though this band has only just started, they should be a name to look out for for years to come.
