Mumbleman at The Masons
We had another great new band playing in Llanelli last Saturday; Mumbleman came down from Cardiff to make their Masons début. The band had played at a few festivals this year, performing at Nozstock, Kaya, Hud and they are at the Swn festival next week, so I was expecting something special and I wasn’t disappointed. The boys were at the pub early and had great fun talking to the locals and looking around the venue’s new deco, in fact, the band were having so much fun that we slightly delayed the start of the gig so that they could finish their conversations.
The band opened with the track Lighter, Brighter and followed it with my favourite of theirs, Gwg. These songs reminded me of
early Super Furry Animals with a garage rock feel and a great fuzzy sound. Other comparisons coming in from the crowd included the Kings of Leon and Jake Bugg but the main name that kept on cropping up was The Arctic Monkeys. The band played a top quality punchy eight song set which impressed throughout. Even though these were a three piece band playing quite a lo-fi style, they still had the sound to fill the room. The audience were full of compliments for the band with landlord Kris asking me when we could get them back in. The singer with my band, Fighting Fifth Husky, who headlined the night, even went as far as saying that they were his favourite band that we have played with, along with The Himalayas, who are also from Cardiff and are performing just before Mumbleman in Clwb Ifor Bach at Swn. The only problem with the band was that they made our singer a bit nervous about playing after them and he did miss our most popular track, A Kind of Life, out of our set.
The band stayed late in the pub chatting with the large crowd and they said that this was definitely their favourite venue west of Cardiff and they can’t wait to come back, particularly as there was a definite bromance happening between the two drummers.
