Everyday Heroes
With Trudi Goldsmith
( Sept 16)
Following their recent Llanelli gig, I caught up with the band Everyday Heroes to find out a bit about them!!
Who is in the band ? Name and role?
There’s four of us in total, Luke Phillips is our lead singer and lead guitarist, Jay Haines plays the drums, Lewis Watkins is our bassist, and Daniel Richards plays rhythm guitar.
How would you describe your music?
We always tend to describe ourselves as Hard Rock, but between the four of us I’d say we have a very wide pool of influences that enforce our song writing. From Country to Thrash and everything in between. The first comparison most people make after hearing us is to Black Stone Cherry, which is a huge honor as they inspire us a lot. But we also look to bands like Guns n’ Roses, Alter Bridge, Nickelback and Shinedown for influence, to name just a few.
Who writes the music and lyrics?
Luke, our singer/lead guitarist is responsible for a large part of the songwriting process. He has a good ear for spotting when a small idea can be developed into a fleshed out piece of music, and that really lends itself to his musical ability. However that’s not to say the entire responsibility falls on his shoulders. One of us could have an idea for a riff, lyrical melody, or even a near finished song which we will all sit and collaborate on. So it’s a shared effort really, which we prefer because it allows all of our varied tastes to influence ideas and create unique pieces of music we’re all really proud of.
How did you end up choosing Llanelli to play a gig?
We’re at a point in our career at the minute where branching out and playing to new audiences is very important. We’re based in the valleys just north of Newport, so we’re really making an effort to discover all the great venues in the cities and towns that are further afield than we are used to playing. We’d heard Llanelli had a great scene for what we do so we knew we had find a way there somehow. The Mason’s Arms offered us the date with Pilgrim, and we snapped up the offer. It’s always exciting the first time you venture to bring your music to a new audience, hopefully we made a few fans in the process.
How did you find your recent experience of playing the Masons in Llanelli?
It was great! You never really know what to expect when you’re playing a venue for the first time, but as soon as we walked through the door and seen how everything was decorated and set out, we knew this was our kind of place. The staff we’re all very friendly and there was a great crowd, everyone made us feel very welcome and what more can you ask for really? We can’t wait to come back.
What is the best and worst thing about being in a band?
The best thing I think is seeing all your hard work pay off. Anyone who knows us will testify at just how much we put into this band, it’s a real blood, sweat and tears operation. So when you see a room full of faces singing your songs back at you, it gives you goosebumps, makes the entire thing worth while.
As for the worst, we’d probably say the long car journeys to get to all the venues we’re playing. When you have a gig you spend all day thinking about it and preparing yourself mentally and physically, so getting cramped up spending hours on the M4 when you’re really excited to play can be a little frustrating.
Do you have any memorable gig stories?
Nothing too juicy springs to mind, but we’ll never forget winning the Battle of the Bands to secure a slot at this year's Steelhouse Festival. We were surrounded by so much talent, truly some of the best unsigned artist we’ve seen in South Wales, so to hear the judges call our name at the end of the night was an incredible feeling, we didn’t stop smiling for days and days.
Where can people find out more about the band ? Links to music and gigs etc
