Spotlight On The Boom Sons

Fresh from their March gig in The Masons Arms Llanelli, Fostá catches up with The Boom Sons to find out more about the band. Who are the boom sons? The Boom Sons are Vanessa batten (vocals/bass) Nathan Morgan (guitar/backing vocals) Richard Mears (Drums/backing vocals) Where did the name of the band come from? On a night out in Cardiff, Richard, our drummer, just started saying it and when it came to a band name we knew it described us well (fun, drunk and quirky) and it's kind of an opposite, as the by the name, you would think that we're an all male band but we're not!!! How long have you been together? We’ve been together for around two years now, no offs just ons. How would you describe your music? Edgy, we have many different styles of music in one song, candy-floss sandwich for example is jazzy then heavy metal/rap vocals with an avant-garde guitar solo in the middle, we don't aim for making our music this way it's just our expression of it!!! What influences your lyrics and music? Anything from Pantera to Jefferson Airplane have inspired the band, some aspects of rap, Eminem and Dr. Dre to slayer to jazz artists, we just appreciate good music. We love blues and go to quite a lot of blues gigs such as Walter Trout and Joe Bonamassa. We’re big fans of the Glastonbury and Reading festivals because of how many diverse artists are playing the festival What is your favourite Boom Sons song and why?

Vanessa - my favourite song is candy floss sandwich it mixes different styles of music from jazz at the beginning, to rap/ metal to experimental with an epic guitar solo in the middle and the slow end Nathan - raise the alarm, I just love the groove of the whole song, the middle eight of the song, the build up makes me jump Richard - move your Derrière I love playing drums to this song, the duel rhythm of verse and I get to sing in the chorus, what more could a drummer want?! All the songs mentioned feature on our album available on Spotify, itunes, Amazon and googleplay What is the best and worst thing about being in a band? There are no bad things about being in the band. We don't actively write the songs we just take the songs where they want to go and what comes out, comes out, which involves less stress. We're all long term friends before the band, which is awesome and we're all interested what the other person is doing!!! The good thing is that the band and the music we make, we love it, it's the best hobby in the world Have you got any interesting gig stories/what's your favourite gig you've played? Once, we were playing the pop factory in the Rhondda and the drummer was pushed at the back of the stage for space, he stood to play and accidentally kicked away his seat so when he went to sit back down he did a backwards roll off the stage, We looked back and there was no drummer at the drum kit, we still laugh now about it Our favourite gig has got to be playing the globe in Cardiff which we've played twice recently with Queen Kwong and Senser, with another show coming up 20th April with the amazing h.e.d pe which promises to be amazing with a lot of tickets sold already What plans do you have for the future of the band? We are going to go back into the studio at some point later in the year to record another mini album, we recorded our last album at pitch black studios in Swansea with Dan Angelow so we want to go back there because we're very happy with the sound of our current mini album!!! The only thing we love to share is our music, it's a release and a hobby for us we don't expect anything of it or anything to come of it, but if we impress one person that's enough for us. We play music because we enjoy and have always enjoyed playing music. If you do so enjoy our music like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter, message us we're a very friendly bunch hope you enjoy the songs at https://open.spotify.com/album/4y2lLfsugbRizioOoKOWGl thanks for playing our songs and thanks for the spotlight in your column Vanessa, Nathan, Dickie.
