Second Sons: Introducing The Bands Playing This Weekends Punks 4 Mental Health Minifest!
Supporting Mental Health Awareness Week 2017 playing on Saturday 13th May on day 2 of the Punks 4 Mental Health Minifest at The Masons Arms, Llanelli are brand new band 'Second Sons.' Find out more about the band and what Mental Health means to them below.....
Can you tell me about Second Sons ? Firstly, we're a brand new band, having formed very recently in February 2017! We're a 3-piece with the lineup consisting of Shane (drums), Bengi (bass), and myself (Lewis) on guitar and vocals. This Punks 4 Mental Health night will also be our first live performance together! However, we're individually in no way new to the gigging circuit; myself and Bengi are both ex-members of Sabrage, having written and toured extensively, whilst Shane, who's a Walsall native, has performed around that part of the world before relocating to Wales recently. This band combines our mutual loves of blues, classic rock and metal into a package we can all be proud of, and one that we can take pleasure from introducing to the world. You are playing at the Punks 4 Mental Health Mini Fest this weekend, what can people expect from the band on the night? As you may expect, we're incredibly excited to finally be performing our live debut! We're all incredibly determined musicians with a lot of drive and very much approach each gig with the mindset of 'play each gig like it's your last'. A band is not just there to play a list of songs, a jukebox can do that. A band's foremost role is to entertain! Therefore, we approach each show with huge passion and love for what we do, with enjoyment the key goal. To that end, we may end up throwing in a few surprises during the set 😉 who said music needed to be 100% serious all the time?! What does it mean to the band to be playing an event aimed at challenging stigma around mental health ? To sum it up, a hell of a lot. Mental health is certainly something that affects all our lives whether we know it or not; it's very likely everyone knows someone suffering, they may go to lengths to disguise it due to the stigma and lack of understanding they could face. The band members certainly have all experienced sometimes quite extensive ill mental health whether personally or with someone close to them, and safe to say it's difficult! Raising awareness of this unfortunate continued existence of stigma surrounding mental health remains so important considering the climate at the moment; this week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the fact that this even must exist to inform and remind people that ill mental health is an incredibly legitimate thing speaks volumes. And don't get me started on the current government's ongoing decimation of mental health services! Making a difference in whatever way we can is so important to us, and the first step in making a difference is to work together to challenge the prevailing attitude. Suffering is not something to be ashamed of, and sufferers should never ever have to face any of it alone.
